6 Fun Facts You Didn’t Know About Beets

The beet, also known as beetroot, is a flavorful, easy-to-use vegetable that is super popular these days. Most of us think beets are a nice addition to a salad, but what most of us don’t know is that they can be used in much more creative ways.

Think juices, hummus, pickles, soup, and pair them with a nice tangy vinegar or goat cheese. They add color, antioxidants, and flavor, so it's no wonder beets are completely on-trend and are receiving the spotlight.

Restaurants across the world are using these versatile vegetables in remarkable ways, so we thought it would be fun to talk about 6 fun facts you might not know about this high-energy, purple root vegetable.

Fun Fact #1: The entire beetroot plant is edible

Did you know that the entire beetroot plant is completely edible? From its purple bulbs to its green leaves and stems, you can prepare the entire beetroot plant in a variety of ways. You won’t be disappointed when you try adding them to recipes as they add a zesty and fresh flavor. Try frying the whole plant with shallots, garlic, and oranges. Yum!

Fun Fact #2: Beetroot juice can decrease muscle soreness

You know those days after crushing it at the gym when you’re so sore you can barely walk?

We do too! When we found out that drinking beetroot juice a few times a day can decrease muscle soreness we totally needed to create a supplement for that. Consuming beetroot, either as a juice or a supplement, can decrease muscle soreness if taken consistently after the first 48 hours of exercise. So, the next time you’re feeling sore make a beetroot smoothie or conveniently take one of our beetroot extract supplements

Fun Fact #3: The biggest beet ever grown was 53 pounds

Most of us think beets only grow to be the size of a baseball, but Jamie Courtney-Fortey and his team of growers decided to prove us wrong in 2019. Jamie and crew successfully grew the heaviest beetroot ever recorded – weighing close to 53 pounds!

Fact #4: Beetroot can improve athletic performance

According to a recent study, beetroot juice can improve your cardio endurance so that you can exercise longer and cover longer distances without fatigue. So get on the beetroot bandwagon! It’ll help you perform better so you can meet your athletic goals.

Fun Fact #5: Beets are a superfood

Not only can beets help improve athletic performance, but they also contribute to other health benefits including reducing blood pressure, preventing anemia, improving circulation, and enhancing cognitive functioning. These little purple vegetables are packed with nutrients like potassium, betaine, magnesium, folate, vitamin C, and nitrates supporting the delivery of fuel to muscles and the brain.

Fun Fact #6: Beets can detoxify your body

Beets have a group of phytonutrients called betalains that work wonders for detoxification. By increasing the amount of enzymes in our system, enzymes like glutathione S-transferase play a major role helping your liver detoxify chemicals, balance our systems, and improve our energy levels.

By adding beets to your diet either through smoothies, salads, or even supplements (like our HILO Energize Gummies), you will see improvements in your circulation, feel more energetic, and boost your overall well being.
